Background
Nepal, after the participation of historic UN Conference on Environment and Development held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1992, has implemented different environment and development activities adopting the Agenda 21 proclaimed in the Earth Summit. The Government of Nepal has been implementing the Sustainable Community Development Programme (SCDP) with the support of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) since 1996 with the integrated workable objective of socio- economic development and environmental management. The government has been engaged in the preparation of World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) Country Profile in 2001.
Nepal has been selected as one of the countries of South Asia for the best practices of sustainable development after the implementation of the SCDP.
Nepal is also elected as the member of the UN Council for Sustainable Development. As all the participated countries were asked in the Earth Summit to make sustainable development agenda for their nations by 2002, Nepal has now formulating the Sustainable Development Agenda for Nepal (SDAN).
Nepal had submitted its development activities updating the outcomes of five years in 1997, also called as Rio+5 meeting. On the course of updating the sustainable development activities, Nepal has updated the information on the progress assessing the outcomes of implementation of sustainable development at national level consulting relevant ministries, government organisations and civil societies. This country profile will be shared in the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD).
This report has been prepared according to the format provided by the United Nations. Although all the chapters included in the format are not relevant in the context of Nepal, are included in the report for general information.
