The SCDP's approach to sustainable development is decentralised, community-based and
bottom-up, and it links social, environmental and economic development initiatives in an
integrated and holistic manner. After only 3 years, the changes in the SCDP Programme
communities have shown that the SCDP approach to sustainable human development is
effective.
Through the SDF/SOs, SCDP has increased community members' ability to help themselves develop their villages in an integrated and sustainable manner. Communities are organised and they realise the strength of community cohesion and that when they work together they are capable of achieving their common goals. The SCDP has helped (CBOs) gain the knowledge, resources and confidence they need to plan and implement environmental management and conservation activities, and other activities that contribute to the socio-economic development of their villages. Additionally, CBO members now have access to credit facilities and are able to obtain loans for economic development activities.
Even though SCDP has worked primarily at the local level, SCDP has also worked closely with local NGOs and representatives from all levels of government to ensure that the Programme has the support it needs to effectively and efficiently implement its activities. Furthermore, in recognition of the success of the Programme, SCDP's approach to sustainable development has been incorporated into Nepal's 9th Five-year Development Plan.
