Multipurpose Forest Nurseries

A community forest maintained by
Shankar CBO, Kailali

  • The multi-purpose nursery in Rumjatar, Okhaldhunga has been handed over to the CBOs in this quarter. They are now managing their nursery and are providing support to CBO members.
     
  • In Kailali, the nurseries have made remarkable progress. CBO members have also collected huge amount of seeds from the natural forest.
     
  • Recently, the Nilam Multipurpose Nursery, Gidhiniya was handed over to Shree Janta Lower Secondary School, Choripur. The school is now managing the nurseries under its full leadership and is promoting Eco- school activities. The CBO members are actively assisting the school to give continuity to the nursery.
     
  • Sarkideu Multipurpose Nursery, Humla has been producing seedlings of different types of medicinal herbs (jadibuti) like Nardostachys grandiflord (“Jatamansi”), Picrorhiza Scrophulariiflora (“Kutki”), Delphinium himalayai (“Atis”), Rheum australe (“Padamchal”), and Hippophae salicifolia (“Seabuckthorn”). The overall progress in this front has encouraged the local people to cultivate medical herbs on their fragile and barren lands.

Improved Cooking Stoves (ICS)

  • The ICS training provided to CBO members of the programme VDCs of Okhaldhunga has proved to be very fruitful. After the completion of the training, the trainees are constructing ICS as per demand. A total of 255 ICS have been installed in the programme VDCs. 18 ICS were installed this quarter.
      
  • In Humla, SCDP promoted 12 ICS in Muchu VDC. The total cost was Rs. 30,000 of which SCDP contributed Rs. 14,000. The SCDP has been trying to develop Muchu VDC as model ICS VDC.
     
  • In Surkhet, 21 ICS were installed by the Navadurga CBO (2) in Lekhfarsa VDC and 19 in Gumi VDC.
     

Eco-Club Activities

Eco-clubs have been playing a very important role in creating as well as promoting awareness among the young school children on national and local environmental activities. Altogether 24 government schools in 6 programme districts have been turned into eco-schools forming and activating eco-clubs. The eco-clubs are engaged in weeding the nurseries, plantation and organising sanitation campaigns and different awareness activities in and around the schools. With regard to this, SDF, Kailali has been launching eco-school management programme. Altogether 4 eco-clubs of Shree Janta L. School, Choripur, Shree Janta P. School, Bhuruwa, Shree Balkanya P. School, Kattipur and Shree Navadurga P. School, Malbhanga are being provided technical support by SDF, Kailali to promote environmental activities in their schools. During this quarter, the eco-clubs have organised different activities like pruning, thinning, class and compound cleaning, quiz contest, game competition and nursery weeding, irrigation and cleaning.

Community Plantation

In Humla, Milijuli women CBO and Tungar women CBO carried out plantation of Jicus religiosa (“Peepal”), Alnus Nepalensis (“Utis”) and “Bains” in five hectares of land. The total cost was about Rs. 35,000, and all the cost was borne by the CBOs. The SCDP provided technical support. It can be argued that this activity can act as a model for women’s active participation in environment management in Humla.

Micro-hydro Electricity

Two CBOs, namely the Basuki men Samaj CBO and Balang Chokfu Kalika women CBO of Unbu Village Development Committee -8 in Okhaldhunga have recently completed installation of a peltric with a capacity of 3 K.W. Each household has contributed Rs. 8,000 in cash and their labour to complete the installation work. The micro-hydro electricity has benefited 26 households.

Sanitation

In this quarter, CBOs in Dang focused on sanitation programmes. Activities included cleaning campaigns, constructing toilets, and encouraging Biogas and ICS constructions.

Gully Control

In this quarter, Shree Rudrakalika mixed CBO from Thulachap VDC in Okhaldhunga completed 500 meters long gully control and trail improvement work. SCDP supported by providing wages for skilled labours and gabion boxes to be used in dams. According to Nirsing Bahadur Karki, member of Rudrakalika mixed CBO, the gully control work will help save more than 200 ropanies of land from flood and landslides during the monsoon period.

Rural Drinking Water Scheme

Two drinking water schemes were completed in January at Unbu VDC in Okhaldhunga. The Kuripum drinking water scheme of Ward-8 was a joint project of Aapgachhi men and Kalika women groups. SCDP provided technical and financial support. The total cost of this project was Rs. 84,502 of which SCDP contributed Rs. 34,760. The second project was also carried out in the same ward— a reservoir tank and three taps were constructed. For this project, SCDP contributed Rs. 18,000 to purchase construction materials like cements and pipes. Mr Laxman Bahadur Rai, former VDC chairperson of Unbu VDC, inaugurated the drinking water schemes.

Community Based Health Clinic

The CBOs members and their family members are getting better, reliable and on time treatment from the community based health clinic in Sugarkhal VDC, supported by SCDP. In this quarter 170 registered patients have been treated.

Coordination with Nepal Safer Motherhood Project

In order to ensure outreach to marginalised groups, SDF Surkhet has coordinated with Nepal Safer Motherhood Project to run Safer Motherhood Programme in 6 VDCs of SCDP programme implemented VDCs.

Completion of Irrigation Pond

Construction of an irrigation pond was completed at Thulachhap VDC-6 of Okhaldhunga. An agreement was signed between Janabikash mix CBO and SCDP in which SCDP was to provide 21 bags of cements and Rs. 2,500 for skilled labour charge. According to Basudev Koirala, member of the Janabikash CBO, the irrigation pond will provide water even during dry season for the cattle as well as irrigate more than 20 ropanies of land.

Infrastructure Development Support

A partnership project among Rumjatar VDC, DDC, SCDP and CBOs completed the construction of stone soling trail from Rumjatar Airport to main road passing through Rumjatar Higher Secondary School in Okhaldhunga. SCDP shared 40% of the total cost, which amounted to Rs. 32,000.

A Kaligandaki suspension bridge built with support from many partners including DDC, ACAP, nearby VDCs and SCDP in Myagdi District has been providing easy access to the people of Narchyan village.
 

E C O N O M I C     D E V E L O P M E N T

The CBO members are continuing their involvement in various income-generating activities using the loan obtained from SCDP. They have been paying the interest and returning the principal on a regular basis. The following table shows the investment, principal returned and interest earned in the SCDP implemented districts. Because of the adverse climatic condition in Humla, it was forced to abandon the above-mentioned activities this quarter.

Goat for all

For the soci-economic upliftment of local people, “Goat for all programme” was initiated in the first quarter of 2002 which continued in this quarter as well. it is a circulatory programme in which the offspring’s of goats distributed to the members in the first run will be distributed to the next group of members in priority order after three months of birth and the process will continue until every member of the CBO gets a goat. The priority order of the member to get goats is based on the poverty ranking prepared by CBO itself based on yearly income and socio-economic condition of the members.
