Community Vegetable Farm: A Profitable Enterprise in Latikoili
Establishing a community vegetable farm, especially near the jungle involves a lot of hard works and efforts. It needs a strong dedication from the farmers, and also financial investment. All in place, the Kalimati Samajsudhar CBO started to prepare 2 Ropani of land at Latikoili-8, Surkhet, for vegetable cultivation. The members fenced the area with support from DFO (8.57 cft wood and 70 kg barbed wire) so that the wild animals cannot invade the field, as the vegetables are extremely palatable to the animals. GEF SGP assisted Kakrebihar Biodiversity & Cuulture Conservation Project (KBCCP) supported the CBO Rs 850/- to purchase vegetable seeds. The members planted various seasonal vegetables such as tomato, potato, spinach, radish, cauliflower, garlic and coriander. And in no time, the members generated a sum of Rs 1408 by selling the parts of the vegetables. "Such a community farm served many purposes," says Mr Narayan Sapkota, Team Leader of SDF/ KBCCP. Firstly, it has used the abandoned land. Secondly, the CBO members have utilised their spare time to work in the farm. Thirdly, they have already drawn the monetary benefits out of the intervention. Most important aspect of this initiative is the development of working team among the CBO members. Mr Jugaram Chaudhari, Chairperson of Community Vegetable Cultivation Committee and member of Kalimati CBO, expresses satisfaction over their achievements and says, "We are very much enthusiastic about our recent success and we have also been able to utilise our spare times working in the farm instead of chatting nonsenses in the Chautari". Sharing about the future plan, Mr Chaudhary further adds, "as the people come to the farm to purchase the vegetables, we are now planning to cultivate off-season vegetables".
